Summary

  • A prophetic curse and its fulfillment. When God says something, it will come to pass, regardless of how long it takes to be fulfilled.

Details and/or Comments

  • When the city of Jericho was destroyed, Joshua placed a prophetic curse on whoever might try to restore the city as a fortress.
  • The curse was fulfilled during a time of intense wickedness in the nation of Israel (the reign of Ahab), approximately 550 years later.
  • The rebuilding could have been done in defiance of the curse, or more likely, in ignorance of it. If it was due to ignorance, it was a willful ignorance, the result of abandoning the God who warned them (through Joshua) about what would happen.

Scripture Passage Comments and Links
Jos 6:26 Joshua commanded them with an oath at that time, saying, "Cursed be the man before Yahweh, who rises up and builds this city Jericho.
With the loss of his firstborn shall he lay its foundation, and with the loss of his youngest son shall he set up its gates."

Implied is a progression from first and the last. If he had any other sons, they too would die. In the end, the builder would have no surviving male offspring to carry on his name.

About 550 years later...

1Ki 16:34 In his [Ahab's] days did Hiel the Bethelite build Jericho: he laid its foundation with the loss of Abiram his firstborn, and set up its gates with the loss of his youngest son Segub, Though people had lived there for centuries, this was the first attempt to rebuild Jericho into a fortified city, with walls and gates.
according to the word of Yahweh, which he spoke by Joshua the son of Nun.
