Summary

  • A vast amount of "resources" dedicated to God: sacrifices "beyond number."

Details and/or Comments

  • This may seem like a lot of sacrifices, and it is. But taken into consideration the fact that there were a few million Israelites, it would probably average out to several families for each one sacrifice.
  • As for the logistics (space, number of priests, etc.), certain types of offerings did not require a priest (though there could have been several thousand priests available at that time).

Scripture

1 Kings 8:4-5 & 2 Chronicles 5:5-6

Bringing the ark to the temple

Scripture Passage #1 Scripture Passage #2 Comments and Links
1Ki 8:4 They brought up the ark of Yahweh, and the Tent of Meeting, and all the holy vessels that were in the Tent; even these did the priests and the Levites bring up.

1Ki 8:5 King Solomon and all the congregation of Israel, who were assembled to him, were with him before the ark, sacrificing sheep and cattle, that could not be counted nor numbered for multitude.

2Ch 5:5 and they brought up the ark, and the Tent of Meeting, and all the holy vessels that were in the Tent; these did the priests the Levites bring up.

2Ch 5:6 King Solomon and all the congregation of Israel, that were assembled to him, were before the ark, sacrificing sheep and cattle, that could not be counted nor numbered for multitude.

Sacrifices beyond number, when the ark of the covenant was brought to the temple.

With so many people bringing sacrifices to be offered, there was too much going on all at one time, for anyone to keep track of the numbers.

The name "Yahweh," when present in an Old Testament passage, represents the Hebrew name for the God of the Bible.
