In the Old Testament, God revealed his name by the consonants "YHWH" - perhaps pronounced as "Yahweh." (Vowels did not exist in the Old Testament Hebrew alphabet.) Some Bible translations use the name "Yahweh" (or sometimes "Jehovah"), but most use the word "LORD" (all capital letters) to represent his name, following the example of early Greek translations of the Old Testament.

The "normal" word "lord" or "Lord" (not when used in place of "Yahweh"), means "Master," or sometimes "Sir."

Sometimes a shortened form of "Yahweh" - "Yah" - will be used in a passage. When connected with the word for "praise," this shortened form (and the word "praise") may be written as: "Hallelujah."

Some important facts to consider:

  • The name of this God is Yahweh.

Exo 34:6-7 - Yahweh passed by before him, and proclaimed, "Yahweh!
