Summary

  • A vast amount of "resources" dedicated to God: sacrifices "beyond number."

Details and/or Comments

  • This may seem like a lot of sacrifices, and it is. But taken into consideration the fact that there were a few million Israelites, it would probably average out to several families for each one sacrifice.
  • As for the logistics (space, number of priests, etc.), certain types of offerings did not require a priest (though there could have been several thousand priests available at that time). Also, the sacrifices were made over a seven day period; and only certain parts of the animal had to be burnt on the altar (not the whole animal).

Sacrifices during the 2-week celebration

Scripture Passage #1 Scripture Passage #2 Comments and Links
1Ki 8:62 The king, and all Israel with him, offered sacrifice before Yahweh.

1Ki 8:63 Solomon offered for the sacrifice of peace offerings, which he offered to Yahweh, two and twenty thousand head of cattle, and one hundred twenty thousand sheep

2Ch 7:4 Then the king and all the people offered sacrifice before Yahweh.

2Ch 7:5 King Solomon offered a sacrifice of twenty-two thousand head of cattle, and a hundred and twenty thousand sheep.

An immense number of sacrifices: 22,000 cattle; 120,000 sheep. Though the king led in the presentation of the sacrifices, it was a group effort by the whole community of Israel.
So the king and all the children of Israel dedicated the house of Yahweh. So the king and all the people dedicated the house of God.
2Ch 7:6 The priests stood, according to their offices; the Levites also with musical instruments belonging to Yahweh, which David the king had made to give thanks to Yahweh (for his [God's] loving kindness endures for ever) - Some of the details about the ceremony.
used when David praised God by means of them: These were the same instruments that David had made and used.
and the priests sounded trumpets before them; and all Israel stood.
1Ki 8:64 The same day did the king make the middle of the court holy that was before the house of Yahweh; 2Ch 7:7 Moreover Solomon made the middle of the court holy that was before the house of Yahweh;
for there he offered the burnt offering, and the meal offering, and the fat of the peace offerings, for there he offered the burnt offerings, and the fat of the peace offerings,

Some of the additional types of offerings. These would have been made on additional altars made for that purpose. (The offerings wouldn't have been done on the pavement!)

because the bronze altar that was before Yahweh was too little to receive the burnt offering, and the meal offering, and the fat of the peace offerings. because the bronze altar which Solomon had made was not able to receive the burnt offering, and the meal offering, and the fat.
