Judges (Bible)

This book is a record of the failures of Israel, as they abandoned the God of Abraham and went after the false gods of the surrounding nations.

At the end of Joshua, it could be said that "Yahweh gave to Israel all the land which he swore to give to their fathers" (Joshua 21:43) and "Nothing failed of any good thing which Yahweh had spoken to the house of Israel. All came to pass" (Joshua 21:45). But God had also told them that he would drive out the people of the land "little by little" (Joshua 7:22), in order to avoid an ecological disaster - the land being overrun by wild animals. Yet instead of remaining faithful to the God who gave them the land, they chose instead to become like the wicked nations who had not yet been driven out.

It was not that God had failed to keep his promise of driving the wicked out completely; rather the sins of Israel, who chose to imitate the wicked, prevented it from happening.
