Scripture

1 Kings 4:29-34

Scripture Passage Comments and Links
1Ki 4:29 God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding much, and very great understanding, even as the sand that is on the seashore.

1Ki 4:30 Solomon's wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the children of the east, and all the wisdom of Egypt.

1Ki 4:31 For he was wiser than all men; than Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman, and Calcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol: and his fame was in all the nations all around.

Exceeding in wisdom.

The wise men mentioned here once had great fame and reputation... now they are basically forgotten. This is an illustration of Ecclesiastes 2:16, which tells us that the wise man and the fool both die, and that there is no lasting memory for them. In the days that come after them, all are long forgotten.

1Ki 4:32 He spoke three thousand proverbs; and his songs were one thousand five. Proverbs and songs.

Some of his writings are found in the book of Proverbs; as well as Psalm 72, Psalm 127 and the Song of Solomon.

1Ki 4:33 He spoke of trees, from the cedar that is in Lebanon even to the hyssop that springs out of the wall; he spoke also of animals, and of birds, and of creeping things, and of fish. Studying nature, natural science. Basically this includes all the main categories of living things: plants (large and small), land creatures (large and small), air creatures, water creatures. This would include not only the facts about these things (which would be an expression of knowledge), but also relationships between them, ways to apply those facts, how to treat them, etc. - all of which would be an expression of wisdom.

He would teach about them and explain them; and if necessary, give them names.

  • Taxonomy in the Bible - This is probably part (but not all) of what Solomon did. Verse 33 gives us the top level for several categories of organisms (similar to the way they are categorized in Genesis 1).
  • The Concept of "Name" - in the Bible, the concept of "naming" something had to do with understanding its significance.
1Ki 4:34 There came of all peoples to hear the wisdom of Solomon, from all kings of the earth, who had heard of his wisdom. Sought-out by all.
