Summary

  • Environmental and health-related disasters related to sin need dealt with by repentance, not by focusing on the "symptoms," the disasters themselves.

Details and/or Comments

  • Those who do not know God will probably not accept this. If we do know God, and understand the concept of Providence, it will be much easier for us to accept this as true.
  • The first section shows a progression, the way out of affliction:
  1. Prayer that involves confession and repentance, then...
  2. God hearing and forgiving, then ...
  3. God teaching us the right way (implying our acceptance of his Word, and obedience to it), and restoration of the blessings - these two either occurring in this specific order (teaching/obeying before the restoration) or else simultaneously.
  • The second section has a similar focus, but it is expanded and stated in a somewhat different way.
  1. The emphasis on "heart" shows that the prayer cannot be pretentious.
  2. This section shows us that any type of judgment-related disaster is to be dealt with in the same way.
  3. If any number of people repent, each of them aware of his own situation (both sins and sufferings), then (Solomon asks God to) hear and forgive, based on what is in each person's heart. The end result? That they may fear and follow God (which implies obedience) all their lives.
