Ecclesiastes 9:1-2

Scripture Passage Comments and Links
Ecc 9:1 For all this I laid to my heart, even to explore all this: that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God; ... The righteous are "in God's hands," no matter what happens. This is similar to the New Testament concept that God uses all things to accomplish good in the lives of those who love him (Romans 8:28).

In other sections of Ecclesiastes, the terms "righteous" and "wise" refer to the same group of people. The terms are used interchangeably, as are the opposite concepts, "wicked" and "foolish."

... whether it is love or hatred, man doesn't know it; all is before them.

Ecc 9:2 All things come alike to all. There is one event to the righteous and to the wicked; to the good, to the clean, to the unclean, to him who sacrifices, and to him who doesn't sacrifice. As is the good, so is the sinner; he who takes an oath, as he who fears an oath.

We cannot predict the future. The "love or hatred" comes equally to both the righteous and the wicked. This refers to those types of things that come by means of God's "providence."
