Summary

  • Human cravings and desires cannot be fully satisfied (gratified). You can pursue such things for your entire life, and they just won't bring ultimate satisfaction. If you base your life on satisfying your desires, there will always be a desire for something more!
  • The sooner we learn this, the better off we will be!

Details and/or Comments

  • The previous verses, v. 1-6, are about having things and being unable to enjoy them. Though God can offer the gift of contentment to those who love and fear him, he has no obligation to give this gift to someone who's goal in life is the pursuit of wealth, possessions, etc.

Scripture

Ecclesiastes 6:7-9 – Satisfaction with what you have

Scripture Passage Comments and Links
Ecc 6:7 All the labor of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.

Ecc 6:8 For what advantage has the wise more than the fool? What has the poor man, that knows how to walk before the living?

People just naturally pursue the things they desire; yet none of those things will ever bring complete and lasting satisfaction.

Having a greater amount of wisdom won't accomplish it; neither will knowing the right way to interact with others.

Ecc 6:9 Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the desire. This also is vanity and a chasing after wind.

Being content with what you have is better than having wishful desires for what you don't (or can't) have.
