Summary

Details and/or Comments

  • The context includes:
  1. The wise person will focus on eternity (i.e., will prepare for death) - v. 1-6.
  2. The wise person will focus on life before eternity - v. 7-12. It will be a "future-focused" life, with the focus being on a patient pursuit of wisdom and righteousness (rather than pursuing wealth, folly, etc.). Verse 10 reminds us to not dwell on the past; for that is not compatible with a "future-focus."

Scripture Passage Comments and Links
Ecc 7:10 Don't say, "Why were the former days better than these?" For you do not ask wisely about this.

There are two ways a person can ask such a question. Though we may be able to learn from the past, don't long to live there! (The second of these two ways is the focus here.)

1 Corinthians 10:11 tells us that we should learn from the past (specifically, Israel's past).
