Significant concepts to consider:

Interesting thought...

In the Bible (originally written in Hebrew and Greek), plants are not described as having "life" (a word which is also translated by the word "soul") or as "dying" (in the sense that an animal "dies")! Though it may be acceptable for us to use those words in the English language, we need to realize that there is a radical distinction between plant "life" and animal "life."

Changes in the nature of plants

At the time of the Fall, plants were affected by the judgment that came. In the future, they will also be affected by restoration that Jesus will bring.

A separate issue: When judgment must come upon peoplebecause of their sins, it will often have a detrimental effect on the environment.

Concerning the identification of plants mentioned in the Bible...

  1. In some instances, the exact identification of the plant may be unknown.
  2. When the identity of the plant is known, the exact species may be different from what we are familiar with today. Because of this, the descriptions given may not quite match what we are familiar with today.
  3. Some plants may have become extinct since the time they were mentioned in the Bible.

Some plant species probably did not survive the Flood. Others have become extinct since that time. (This is happening to this very day.) In many instances, there are fossil remains, from specimens that were entombed in the mud, during the Flood.

Main category = "grass" (better translated "vegetation") - not found elsewhere in Genesis.
Subcategory #1 = "herbs yielding seed after their kind" (herbs, plants of the field, sometimes translated "grass" in a general sense of "plants in the field")

These were at first not present, because of missing requirements. Then God took care of the requirements.
Requirement #1 - no rain on the earth... God's provision: a mist went up from the earth (also a river in the garden, v. 10).
Requirement #2 - no man to till the ground ... God's provision: Yahweh God formed man ...
