Parent topic: Plant Life.

These items came into existence when the earth was cursed because of human sin. This physiological change to the plants would be a reminder and picture of judgment - not only the judgment in Genesis 3, but also other judgments that would come in later years.

Because of Adam's sin... "... cursed is the ground for your sake. / Thorns also and thistles will it bring forth to you; ..." (Genesis 3:17-18).

Isaiah 5:1-30

The worthless vineyard (a parable about Israel): Isa 5:6 I will lay it a wasteland. It won't be pruned nor hoed, but it will grow briers and thorns..."
Briars and thorns are a picture of the judgment (for sin) that would come upon the land.

Isaiah 32:9-20

Isa 32:13 - "Thorns and briars will come up on my people's land; yes, on all the houses of joy in the joyous city."
