The reason is the WICKEDNESS of the people, not the condition of the environment.

Genesis 6 & 7 describe the conditions prior to the Flood, preparation for it, and it's occurrence. Chapter 8 describes it's subsidence.

Genesis 5:1-32

Gen 5:29 Lamech named his son Noah, saying, "He will comfort us in our work and in the toil of our hands, because of the ground which Yahweh has cursed."
Was the burden of working the ground increasing, perhaps through being overworked for many centuries (combined with massive population growth)? If so, there are many potential ecological implications. This "second world" will soon come to an end, in Noah's day (the "Second World Judgment"); but the reasons for the judgment, given in chapter 6, have to do with moral issues, not ecological ones.

Genesis 6:1-8

Reason for the judgment = total WICKEDNESS - Gen 6:5-7 Yahweh saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. Yahweh was sorry that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him in his heart. Yahweh said, "I will destroy man whom I have created from the surface of the ground; man, along with animals, creeping things, and birds of the sky; for I am sorry that I have made them."

Genesis 7:1-24

A description of the judgment itself.

Deuteronomy 2 & 3 (selected)

Just as God had to destroy the entire earth, once people became irreversibly wicked, so also he had to destroy the inhabitants of the land of Canaan, when they became irreversibly wicked.
