This page focuses specifically on the classifying of plants, animals, non-living created entities, etc. For the more general concept of classifying and organizing things (including concepts), see:

Basic Observations

  • When the Bible describes various categories of organisms, it usually does not imply that there are no other categories.
  • When two "extremes" are mentioned, it may, by implication, include everything in-between. This is true even when describing or categorizing non-living entities and concepts.
  • When defining groups of organisms, the Hebrew concept of "kind" is a significant concept. This defines the range of reproductive possibilities for an organism.

Scripture Pages that Link to Here

Genesis 1:1 - 2:3

A basic description of the various general categories of living organisms. [Note that Genesis 2:5 adds the category of "shrub" to the basic group "vegetation."]

1 Kings 4:29-34

Solomon taught and explained all sorts of things related to nature. This would probably include grouping them together into categories that helped understand them better. Verse 33 illustrates some of the most basic categories of living organisms, patterned after the categories of Genesis 1.
