Deuteronomy 2 & 3 (selected)

Possession of the land is based on who God gives it to. (NOTE: As other passages have said, God is the ultimate owner, not people. He has the right to give the land to those who are willing to honor (rather than defy) him.
Regarding some of the nearby lands, God tells Israel that he didn't give them those lands. This is why Israel was not allowed to conquer them.

Deuteronomy 6:1-25

Deu 6:10-11 - ... Yahweh your God shall bring you into the land which he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give you, great and goodly cities, which you didn't build, and houses full of all good things, which you didn't fill, and cisterns dug out, which you didn't dig, vineyards and olive trees, which you didn't plant, and you shall eat and be full; ...
Deu 6:18-19 - You shall do that which is right and good in the sight of Yahweh; that it may be well with you, and that you may go in and possess the good land which Yahweh swore to your fathers, to thrust out all your enemies from before you, as Yahweh has spoken.
Deu 6:23 - ... he brought us out from [Egypt], that he might bring us in, to give us the land which he swore to our fathers.

Deuteronomy 7:1-26 - sovereignty and responsibility both included here

Yahweh your God shall bring you into the land where you go to possess it, ... :Yahweh your God shall deliver [the nations] up before you, and you shall strike them / you shall utterly destroy them: you shall make no covenant with them, nor show mercy to them; neither shall you make marriages with them;...
Yahweh your God will cast out those nations ... will deliver them up before you, and will confuse them with a great confusion, until they be destroyed ... will deliver their kings into your hand / you shall make their name to perish from under the sky ... (and numerous instructions related to the avoidance of idolatry).
Note that God would give them the land "little by little," to prevent it from being overrun by wild animals. (In the book of Judges, we discover that they quit trusting God to do this; their loyalty to him eventually diminished to nothing. So this never totally happened.)

Deuteronomy 8:1-20

God is giving you all these blessings. Beware lest you give the credit to yourself! (Then he will take the blessings/land away.)
He gives it to them... "that he may establish his covenant which he swore to your fathers."

Deuteronomy 9:1-29

God will give them the land. It's because of the Canaanites' wickedness, not because of any righteousness on the part of Israel. (Also, in keeping with his promise to their ancestors.)

Deuteronomy 11:1-28

If you do obey...
  1. You will overpower nations stronger than you.
  2. Everywhere you go in the land will be yours.

1 Kings 8:35-40 & 2 Chronicles 6:26-31

"The land which you gave to our fathers..." - This is what God will restore (from judgment), after the people pray in repentance to God.

Psalm 37 (selected verses)

Those who trust God will inherit the land.

Psalm 44:1-3

God did it, not Israel!
Psa 44:2-3 - You drove out the nations with your hand, but you planted them. You afflicted the peoples, but you spread them abroad. For they didn't get the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them; but your right hand, and your arm, and the light of your face, because you were favorable to them.
