This sin often a direct violation of the first two of the 10 Commandments, and can be related to several of the other commandments.

Leviticus 26:1-45

A rejection of all forms of idolatry is one of the requirements, in order to receive God's blessings.


Deuteronomy 7:1-26

Regarding the wicked nations in Canaan: Break down their altars, and dash their pillars in pieces, and cut down their Asherim, and burn their engraved images with fire. / Burn the engraved images of their gods with fire.
You shall not covet the silver or the gold that is on them, nor take it for yourself, lest you be snared in it; for it is an abomination to Yahweh your God.
You shall not bring an abomination into your house, and become a devoted thing like it. You shall utterly detest it, and you shall utterly abhor it; for it is a devoted thing.


Deuteronomy 29:1-29

Deu 29:25 (+) - The results of forsaking the covenant of Yahweh, and going after other gods, ... : the anger of Yahweh will be kindled against this land, to bring on it all the curse that is written in this book; and Yahweh will root them out of their land in anger, and in wrath, and in great indignation, and cast them into another land...


Psalm 78:1-72

Even after God had brought Israel into the land of Canaan (just as he had promised), they continued to distrust God, like their ancestors, and went after false gods.


Psalm 135:1-21

Psa 135:15-18 The idols of the nations are silver and gold, the work of men's hands. They have mouths, but they can't speak. They have eyes, but they can't see. They have ears, but they can't hear; neither is there any breath in their mouths. Those who make them will be like them; yes, everyone who trusts in them.
