The concept "earth" (or "land"), as used in the Bible, can have a variety of meanings or emphases. For instance, it can refer to:

  1. the entire globe that we call "the earth,"
  2. the land, as opposed to the water,
  3. the surface of the ground that we can 'see, where people and animals walk,

and more.

Knowing this fact may help us to better understand Scripture passages that use the word "earth" in unexpected ways!

Genesis 1:1 - 2:3

Gen 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.


Psalm 24:1-10

The focus in v. 1-2 is on the dry land (the inhabited earth - as opposed to the oceans and seas), and specifically its surface. This land "came out" of the waters on the third day of creation.


Psalm 89:11-12

Psa 89:11 The heavens are yours. The earth also is yours; the world and its fullness. You have founded them.


Psalm 104:1-35

How should we respond to the greatness and goodness of God, and the greatness and goodness of his creation? We, too, can rejoice. But we should also respond with reverent fear, awe and humility. Even creation responds in a way that is analogous to this, as illustrated in these verses. (Psa 104:32 He looks at the earth, and it trembles. He touches the mountains, and they smoke.)


Psalm 148:1-14

Psa 148:9 Praise Yahweh ... mountains and all hills;


Ecclesiastes 1:1-18

Ecc 1:4 One generation goes, and another generation comes; but the earth remains forever.
Also: everything on the earth seems to come and go in cycles (examples: the sun, wind and water cycle.


Ecclesiastes 5:1-7

Heaven and earth contrasted, to illustrate the contrast between God and people.
Ecc 5:2b - ... God is in heaven, and you on earth.
