When examining the concept of "sea," there are at least two concepts to consider:

  1. Large, open bodies of water, which we normally call lakes, seas and oceans.
  2. Underground bodies of water, the sources of springs and the "fountains of the deep." Today, these tend to be found in porous rock, though it may have been different before the Flood. (At that time, the "fountains of the deep" broke open. The ground collapsed, and the waters that burst forth are probably the source of the oceans that now exist.)

Scripture Pages that Link to Here

Genesis 1:1 - 2:3

Genesis 1:9-10 - The waters under the sky were gathered together into one place (so that the dry land could appear). The fact that the water is located in "one" place may indicate that it had a much smaller size than do the oceans today.

Genesis 8:1-22

V. 1-3 refer to the Flood waters subsiding - today probably located in the ocean.

Job 9:5-10

Job 9:8 He (God) alone ... treads on the waves of the sea.

Psalm 24:1-10

The focus in v. 1-2 is on the dry land (the inhabited earth - as opposed to the oceans and seas), and specifically its surface. This land "came out" of the waters on the third day of creation.

Psalm 33:1-22

Psa 33:7 He gathers the waters of the sea together as a heap. He lays up the deeps in storehouses.

Psalm 65:5-13

The power of God... Calms the seas... and nations. (The God who brought order to creation can also bring order to the relationships between nations.)
Figuratively, the wicked nations are compared to tumultuous waves on the water.

Psalm 104:1-35

God's wonderful works – evident throughout the earth. The seas are teeming with life; even humans go there (in ships).

Psalm 107:1-43

God raises the storm; he calms the sea.
