"Animals" includes:

Some animal species probably didn't survive the Flood, at least for very long. For instance, of the various species that were on the ark (i.e., air breathing animals), some probably couldn't adapt to the new environment, and began to die off soon after the Flood ended. (Species are dying off to this very day.)

We have evidence of these now-extinct species, from the fossil remains of animals that were entombed in the mud (now changed to rock), during the Flood.

For the issue of animals overrunning the land - see: Wild Animals and Insects and Similar Creatures. At times, this would be the result of an ecological imbalance.

Concerning the identification of animals mentioned in the Bible...

  1. In some instances, the exact identification of the animal may be unknown.
  2. When the identity of the animal is known, the exact species may be different from what we are familiar with today. Because of this, the descriptions given may not quite match what we are familiar with today.
  3. Some animals may have become extinct since the time they were mentioned in the Bible.

Changes in the nature of animals

At the time of the Fall, animals were affected by the judgment that came. In the future, they will also be affected by restoration that Jesus will bring.

(comment) Instinctively, animals do what they were intended to do in this present age. For some species, this includes killing and eating other animals. When the curse of sin is removed from the earth (Romans 8:20-23, etc.), there will be an adjustment in their natures, so that such characteristics will no longer exist. (Certain characteristics and traits were introduced at the time of the Fall. Such characteristics were not part of their natures before then, and will be changed after Jesus returns!)

Psalm 8:1-9

God has placed us above the rest of the creatures he made, with the task of ruling over them, in God's behalf! As a prophecy, this is already fulfilled in Jesus Christ. It is only partly fulfilled in the rest of us - but when Jesus returns, the fulfillment will be complete.

Psalm 104:1-35

A variety of plants and animals are mentioned in this chapter.

Psalm 148:1-14
