The Bible's concept of "soul" doesn't match the views of most people - who's views are unknowingly influenced by the teachings of ancient pagan Greek philosophers. (These pagan views are what we learn from the culture around us - and often from the pulpit. So unless people take the time to explore this issue, it's just "natural" for them to hold such views.)
