{COMMENT: People tend to think that, if they ignore their sin long enough, it will get fuzzy and eventually disappear. But it never does. The earliest sins you committed as a child still cry out for justice. The only way we can avoid bearing the punishment for our sin is by accepting Jesus' offer to bear the punishment for us - and this is available only through repentance and trust.}

(Some examples of the seriousness of sin.)

See also: Genesis 3:1-24 (results of eating from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil) and Genesis 6:1-8 (reasons for the Flood).

  • Also: Genesis 49 (Jacob's blessings on the 12 tribes) - certain tribes received judgments as the result of the sins of their forefathers. Example: Simeon and Levi (49:5-7) would be scattered among the other tribes, rather than having specific territories allotted to them.

Exodus 32:1-35

(After worshiping the golden calf.) God threatened to totally destroy the people. Moses commanded the Levites to kill many of the guilty people with the sword. God killed some with a plague. God would blot the guilty from his "book". In the end, none of them made it to the promised land.

Joshua 7:11-20

Because Achan stole things that belonged to God, God couldn't go to battle with the people, and other people died. In order for God to be with the nation, 1) the things stolen to God would need returned, and 2) Achan and everything he had (including his family) would need to be destroyed.
