See also: Riches. The two concepts are related; but we are defining "possessions" as the broader category (all that a person may own), and "riches" as the narrower category, focusing on items we normally associate with wealth: gold, silver, treasures, etc.

In an some cultures, riches may be defined in terms of numbers flocks and herds, or some other way. So this distinction is mainly an arbitrary one, based more on the way we tend to view them.

Ecclesiastes 2:1-26

See v. 4(+) for a list of the his possessions, the results of a productive life. The Teacher's (most likely Solomon) gained an enormous amount of possessions and evaluated their significance, guided by wisdom. The conclusion: Though there is value to possessions, if received as a gift from God (and properly enjoyed, in a manner that is influenced by that understanding), the value is temporary and ends at death. Possessions are not what gives us lasting significance!
