In preparation for meeting God, the people would have to "sanctify" themselves – "set themselves apart" as special (holy).

Leviticus 11:1-47

Holiness, as related to "clean" and "unclean" animals.

Deuteronomy 7:1-26

You (Israel) are set apart for God - Deu 7:6 - For you are a holy people to Yahweh your God: Yahweh your God has chosen you to be a people for his own possession, above all peoples who are on the face of the earth.

Deuteronomy 23:12-14, 19-25

Since God was going to be present among the people, would take care of them, etc., the entire camp was to be kept holy. This would influence all things - even the way they dealt with the issue of human waste.
