The God of the Bible is not what the average "church-goer" wants. He'd rather have one that overlooks sin and rebellion.

"I don't want that type of "God" (the one described below)... I want one that just sits around loving me, and says, 'That's OK,' every time I deliberately sin against God and neighbor."

Exodus 20:1-21 AND Deuteronomy 5:1-33

Make no images or likenesses of the True God. Why? ... I, Yahweh your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and on the fourth generation of those who hate me, and showing loving kindness to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.

Exodus 33 and 34 (selected verses)

Exo 34:6-7 Yahweh passed by before him, and proclaimed, "Yahweh! Yahweh, a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness and truth, keeping loving kindness for thousands, forgiving iniquity and disobedience and sin; and that will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, and on the children's children, on the third and on the fourth generation."
The only proper response: Exo 34:8 Moses hurried and bowed his head toward the earth, and worshiped.
Exo 34:14 ... Yahweh, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God (and will allow no competition with other gods).

Numbers 13 & 14 (selected)

When God threatens to destroy the people, Moses appeals to God on the basis of God's very own description of himself (in Exodus 34:6-7).
Num 14:17-18 Now please let the power of the Lord be great, according as you have spoken, saying, "Yahweh is slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, forgiving iniquity and disobedience; and that will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and on the fourth generation."
