The ark of the covenant was a chest or box that contained the stone tablets on which were engraved the words of the covenant, made between Israel and God. The very words inscribed on the tablets had been engraved by God himself.

A jar of manna, Aaron's rod that budded, and the Book of the Law were also placed with it (though not in the compartment that contained the two stone tablets).

Several miraculous events occurred in the presence of this ark.

Joshua 3 & 4 (selected)

As those carrying the ark reach the Jordan River, the waters divide - they "pile-up" upstream - until the people cross and the Jordan is taken out of the river.

  • Note: At the time of the dedication of the temple, the stone tablets were still there (1 Kings 8:9).

Psalm 24:1-10

(Comment) Psalm 24 may have been written to celebrate the bringing of the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem (2 Samuel 6).
