Expressing Love for God
Our Attitude - Trust, Humility, etc.

The third commandment focuses on our attitude about God. The way we use his name (which represents who he is) reflects our attitude. However, God sees the heart, so even our unspoken attitude is significant. Scripture often refers to people who claim with their mouth to have loyalty and love for God, but who deny it by their hearts.

These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. (Mark 7:6b)

The articles on this page have a greater focus on what occurs in the heart and mind - trust, humility, etc. These are the foundation of the more visible aspects of love for God, such as "Fellowship with God," our attitude about "Religion," and the various aspects of obedience that naturally flow out of love (John 14:23-24).

God and Your Needs

In Matthew 6:24-34 Jesus exhorts us to trust "our Father in heaven" to take care of our needs. We are to seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and let him take care of lesser things. This article reminds us of this fact, and provides suggestions (and Scripture passages) for exploring various issues related to this trust.

No Good Thing Will God Withhold

A look at Psalm 84:11 (which tells us that God won't withhold anything good), and things we should consider when it looks as though God is withholding something good.

Matthew 6:33

Just a reminder. This verse is quoted 2 ways (one being a mistranslation) and the question is asked about which way you follow. Do you trust God all the time and live by his priorities... or just when convenient?

Humility

A comprehensive look at the concept of humility, as defined by the New Testament. All the N.T. verses are examined, and numerous study questions are provided for reflection and application. [Note that, though this article has a strong emphasis on having humility in our relationship with God, there is also a place for humility in our relationships with other people.]

Some Thoughts about Humility

This article looks at various issues related to humility and its presence in our lives. How can we have genuine humility? How can we recognize it in our lives? How can we distinguish it from false humility?

Psalm 1 (My Translation)

This psalm contrasts the attitude of a disciple (follower of God) to a non-disciple (anyone who doesn't follow the God of the Bible - described in this psalm as a "wicked" person).

Psalm 23 (My Translation)

I needed the psalm for an article that had "too much Bible" for the copyright restrictions, and I had no public domain  translations (at that time) which suited my purpose. So I translated the psalm myself.

Psalm 131 (My Translation)

An expression of trust and humility.

Joseph and Mary: Examples of Trust in God

If Joseph and Mary could trust God in their situation - which was much more "extreme" than any situation we will experience - then so can we. Included are two "instructor guides" for group discussions. They were used with some groups of teens, who then met together and shared their insights (in the form of skits, discussions, or whatever other means of communication they chose to use).

Deuteronomy 29:29

God has given us everything we need for life and godliness. He has told us everything we need to know, so we can trust him in everything else - the things we don't understand. This verse is a reminder of that fact.

The Bible says...

God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. (1 Peter 5:5b)

The LORD is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him... (Nahum 1:7)
