These Hebrew words apparently mean "Light" and "Perfection." It was a means by which the high priest determined the will of God.

There is absolutely no description of "Urim and Thummim" in the Bible. It has been suggested that they were stones that were worn, along with the "breastplate of judgment" (which contained 12 precious stones); but this remains speculation.

(comment) The high priest, who had the Urim and Thummim, was with David. This may have been the means by which David inquired of Yahweh about what to do during the battle. (Also, David himself was a prophet.)
