In this judgment, Jesus took the deserved punishment for the sins of his people - all who are willing to repent of their sins, turn to God, and follow Jesus. In this event our sins were placed upon Jesus. He was the atoning sacrifice that took away our guilt. He accomplished forever what could only be hinted at by the sacrifices of the Old Covenant (many of which were a picture of what he would do).

But the story dos not stop here. By his resurrection, he replaced the Old Covenant with the New, just like the prophets had foretold. He fulfilled the Law and satisfied its requirements. He also took the Law "written on stone" and embedded the its requirements in the hearts of his followers - so that the desire to do what is right is now internal. (This is one of the ways a genuine follower of Jesus can be distinguished from a fake - of which there are many.)
