God's people are like light shining in a dark place, or like salt (Matthew 5:13-16). Their influence can be seen in two ways:

  1. When they increase in number, righteousness, peace, joy increases in the nation.
  2. When they decrease in number (which would include becoming apostate, if their godliness was merely "skin deep"), evil and violence increase.

Genesis 6:1-8

When they ceased to be godly (by marrying unbelievers - resulting in unsaved offspring)... wickedness and violence everywhere.

Genesis 19:1-29

It was because "God remembered Abraham," that he spared Lot. In the previous chapter, when Abraham prayed for God to spare the cities, his main concern was for Lot and his family.
We could also add comments in a previous chapter, that if a mere 10 righteous people were present in the city (or perhaps entire region?), God would have withheld judgment from them!
