- v. 28 - God's command to "Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth."
- Gen 3:16 To the woman he said, "I will greatly multiply your pain in childbirth. In pain you will bring forth children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you." Increased pain; possibly increased frequency of bearing children. With death having entered the world, there would need to be births not only to fill the earth, but to replace those who died.
- Physical changes that would result in pain during childbirth... a reminder of the grim realities that now exist. Childbirth, which originally would have been only a joy, now brings forth children into a cursed world of pain and death - and this begins with spiritual death.
- Consider the implications of the long lifespans... Note the potential for huge population increases. With such long lives, a woman's ability to bear children could span several centuries!
