- God commanded that they hamstring the horses. This would prevent their use in battle.
- NOTE: Israel was not to use horses in battle - at least large numbers of them, Deuteronomy 17:16. (They were to trust in the Living God, instead.) But eventually (during the times of the kings), they disobeyed this command.
- This passage gives a description of a spirited war-horse; whose strength is given by God. Various metaphors are used to describe the battle.
- Woe to people who look to humans (and their horses) for help, and NOT to God! How horrible it will be for them!
- We are to trust God, not horses.
- In Israel's case, both of these actions - returning to Egypt and acquiring warhorses - were forbidden (Deuteronomy 17:16). So this was a "double" sin.
