Conscience is not a perfect guide, since it tells us afterwards that we did right or wrong - when it's too late to change things. Also, we are capable of deadening it, by repeatedly sinning. Even so, it is still sufficient for being a basis for our future judgment, if we have not been exposed to the Law of God (see Romans 2).

Genesis 3:1-24

After Adam and Eve ate the fruit, their eyes were opened. But instead of being opened to the blessings and joys of obedience (the results of the choice they did not take), their eyes became open to the horrors of disobedience - sin and all its consequences. They knew they were guilty and tried to cover-up or hide their sin (and its consequences).
