The Significance of Circumcision

  • This rite was also practiced in other nations, but not because of a covenant promise with God.
  • When given to Abraham and his offspring, it would symbolize an oath of allegiance to God, a willingness to trust and obey him.
  • It would apply to Abraham, his offspring, and all who were a part of his household.
  • It was mandatory, even for 8-day-old male children. This is because obedience and loyalty to God is mandatory. Obedience to God is mandatory for all people in all ages, even today - Acts 17:30, etc.
  • Implied in the oath were severe consequences if the oath were broken. "As I have cut off my foreskin, may the Lord cut off (destroy) both me and my offspring, if I fail to be loyal to God."
  • There are many passages in the Old Testament (and a few in the New Testament) which describe people as being "cut off" - whether from participation in the nation Israel, or from God. (The two concepts implied about the same thing.) The phrase was also applicable to people who were under the obligation to be circumcised, but who were unwilling to do so; for it was tantamount to saying, "I refuse to promise loyalty to God." (See Genesis 17:14.)

  • "Female circumcision," practiced in some pagan cultures, has no place in the Bible.

SEE ALSO: The Need for Changed Hearts. The external act of circumcision was intended to be a reminder of the needed internal ("heart") change that was to occur! See Deuteronomy 30:1-20.

TO ADD: Deu 10:16 Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no more stiffnecked.

Misc. Notes

The Need for Reminders - probably include a link to this page - parent topic?

Genesis 17:1-27

The rite of circumcision is initiated as a sign or reminder of their (Abraham + family) commitment to obey God.

See also: Exodus 4:24-26. Moses' disobedience in this matter (not circumcising his son) almost got him killed by God!

Deuteronomy 30:1-20

When the people (who were judged/exiled) repent and turn back to God: He will circumcise your heart so that you will love God totally. Contrast this with Deuteronomy 29:4, which describes their hearts as unchanged (=wicked).
