Jesus came... WHY?

1. To do the Father's will / God's will, not to do his own will

I have come not to do my will, but to do the will of him who sent me - John 6:38
I have come to do your will, O God - Hebrews 10:7 [A quote from the Old Testament Scriptures]
I have come to do your will - Hebrews 10:9

2. To fulfill the law, not to abolish it

I came not to abolish the law but to fulfill it - Matthew 5:17

3. To be a light / a truth-bearer / to preach [the truth]

I have come as a light, so that those who trust in me will not remain in darkness - John 12:46
I have come to testify to the truth - John 18:37
I have come to preach (to people in many villages) - Mark 1:38

4. To preach peace, but not to bring peace...

He came and preached peace [reconciliation with God] to those who were near (Jews) and those who were far away (Gentiles) - Ephesians 2:17
I have not come to bring peace - Matthew 10:34; Luke 12:51

5. ...but to bring division/hostility

I have come to bring a sword - Matthew 10:34
I have come to turn family members against each other - Matthew 10:35
I have come to bring division - Luke 12:51

6. ...also to judge/bring fire

I have come to bring fire upon the earth - Luke 12:49
I have come for judgment - so that the blind may see and those seeing may become blind - John 9:39

7. ...to destroy sin and the devil's work

He came to do away with sin ... - Hebrews 9:26
He appeared so that he might take away our sins - 1 John 3:5
He appeared so that he might destroy the devil's work - 1 John 3:8

8. To die, but to give life

I have come to this hour [to die] - John 12:27
... by the sacrifice of himself - Hebrews 9:26
I have come so that the sheep [those who follow him] may have life to its fullest - John 10:10

NOTE: To fully appreciate the significance of any specific verse, the context of that verse should be carefully examined. Scripture has much more to say on this topic... other verses just don't happen to have the phrase, "I came" (etc.), which we are looking at, in this study.
