This concept has to do with moral foolishness and the disregarding of wisdom (which is from God and is directly linked to righteous conduct). It does not refer to the lack of intelligence, or mere stupidity (unless it is willful)!

See also the opposite of folly and foolishness: Wisdom.

Scripture Pages that Link to Here

Ecclesiastes 2:1-26

Two lifestyles are examined in this passage - a wasteful lifestyle (focus on pleasure and entertainment), and the productive lifestyle (focus on accomplishment and its benefits). Both are evaluated in this chapter, and wisdom is the guides the evaluations. The productive lifestyle proves to be the wise one, and the wasteful lifestyle proves to be foolish.

Ecclesiastes 4:1-16

Ecc 4:5 The fool folds his hands together and ruins himself. (Laziness is foolish and self-destructive.)

Ecclesiastes 5:1-7

Fools make empty promises to God; they want God to listen to them, rather than them listening to God. They daydream a lot (perhaps "wishful thinking") and utter lots of words and make lots of promises; when they should be silent and attentive to God!
Be quiet and listen to God, rather than demanding that he listen to you! Remember who God is, and don't make empty promises or vows. If you do make any promises, make sure you keep them! It would be better to not promise anything, than to bring judgment upon yourself. Don't let your dreams (perhaps dreams of better circumstances) cause you to sin.

Ecclesiastes 9:7 - 10:1

Things that can disrupt life (#2): The actions of moral fools. An illustration is given, in which wisdom saved a city. Even so, people don't appreciate wisdom.
The sin of folly can "accomplish" a lot; but it is not the same as what wisdom can do. What it accomplishes is destructive. Folly (which people tend to prefer over wisdom) is like a contaminant.
