You must honor parental authority.

  • We must honor all legitimate authority, beginning at home.
  • By implication, authority must not mistreat those under authority.
  • As with the other commands, this command represents an entire "category" of attitudes and actions.

The "exception" to the command: When a human authority gives a command that goes against God's authority, the human authority is to be disobeyed, and God obeyed. This is called Civil Disobedience.


Exodus 20 Deuteronomy 5
Exo 20:12 "Honor your father and your mother, Deu 5:16 "Honor your father and your mother, as Yahweh your God commanded you;
that your days may be long in the land which Yahweh your God gives you. that your days may be long, and that it may go well with you, in the land which Yahweh your God gives you.
