Do not misuse the name of the True God.

  • We must have an utmost reverence for who God is and for everything about him.
  • As with the other commands, this command represents an entire "category" of attitudes and actions.


Exodus 20 Deuteronomy 5
Exo 20:7 "You shall not take the name of Yahweh your God in vain,

for Yahweh will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.

Deu 5:11 "You shall not take the name of Yahweh your God in vain:

for Yahweh will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.

Lev 19:12 " 'You shall not swear by my name falsely, and profane the name of your God. I am Yahweh.
