First Commandment

Make no substitutes for the True God.
- There is only one God, and we must have no other.
- As with the other commands, this command represents an entire "category" of attitudes and actions.

- You must serve the True God and not go after the fake gods or the practices of the pagans. / Make no agreement with them or their gods, nor live with them (lest they tempt you to sin).
Exodus 33 and 34 (selected verses)
- (In the land of Canaan) Destroy all their religious practices; make no covenants with them, or you will be tempted to go after their gods.
- Deu 6:14 You shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the peoples who are around you;
- Make NO marriages with the Canaanites, or they will turn away your sons/daughters from following me, that they may serve other gods: so the anger of Yahweh would be kindled against you, and he would destroy you quickly.
- You shall break down their altars, and dash their pillars in pieces, and cut down their Asherim, and burn their engraved images with fire. (See also Idolatry.)
- Deu 8:19 It shall be, if you shall forget Yahweh your God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you this day that you shall surely perish.
- If you go after false gods, God will shut up the sky and you will perish.
- You must not follow those who tempt you to go after other gods. Rather, put the false prophet to death.
- Blessings if you do not go after other gods, to serve them.
- Worshiping the golden calves violated the second commandment - claiming that they represented Yahweh. It was not a violation of the first commandment, which prohibited going after other "gods."
1 Kings 9:1-9 & 2 Chronicles 7:12-22
- If they abandoned the true God and went after fakes... God would remove them from the land.
