The focus here is on the general concept of having (or avoiding) strong ties between the godly and the wicked. Compare with 2 Corinthians 6:14-7:1.

You must make no agreement with them or their gods, nor live with them (lest they tempt you to sin).

Exo 34:12 Be careful, lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land where you are going, lest it be for a snare in the midst of you.
(Destroy their altars, etc.) Also: make no marriages with them.


2 Kings 3:6-27

Jehoshaphat the king of Judah should not have become allied with the idolatrous kings of Israel and Edom... even though his presence was the only reason Elisha was willing to help them when they were in trouble (v. 14)!
