The focus here is on the general concept of having (or avoiding) strong ties between the godly and the wicked. Compare with 2 Corinthians 6:14-7:1.

2 Corinthians 6:14-7:1 Don't be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what fellowship have righteousness and iniquity? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? What agreement has Christ with Belial? Or what portion has a believer with an unbeliever? What agreement has a temple of God with idols? For you are a temple of the living God. Even as God said, "I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they will be my people. Therefore, " 'Come out from among them, and be separate,' says the Lord. 'Touch no unclean thing. I will receive you. I will be to you a Father. You will be to me sons and daughters,' says the Lord Almighty." Having therefore these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

You must make no agreement with them or their gods, nor live with them (lest they tempt you to sin).

(Destroy their altars, etc.) Also: make no marriages with them.

2 Kings 3:6-27

Jehoshaphat the king of Judah should not have become allied with the idolatrous kings of Israel and Edom... even though his presence was the only reason Elisha was willing to help them when they were in trouble (v. 14)!
